ADSL stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line and is the technology that allows high-speed internet to be delivered over an analogue, copper phone line. The quality of phone lines vary and they weren’t originally engineered with ADSL in mind. This means ADSL can generally only be used over relatively short distances, restricting access to roughly 5km distance from the exchange. Our ADSL uses the Telstra backbone which is available to 75% of the population and 81% of Telstra land lines.
ADSL2+ is an improvement on ADSL technology and offers higher speeds and better resistance to noise on the line. The download speeds on ADSL & ADSL2+ are significantly faster than their corresponding upload speeds. ADSL2+ has a maximum download speed of 20Mbps and max upload speed of 1Mbps. The maximum speeds on ADSL are 8Mbpx down & 384Kbps up. These maximum speeds are heavily affected by the quality of the copper phone line carrying the ADSL and the distance from the exchange.
